The Charlotte Observer Magazine Division

They produce a variety of local lifestyle publications, including SouthPark Magazine, Lake Norman Magazine, University City Magazine, Carolina Bride, and First Impressions Newcomer’s Guide. We are looking for two editorial interns for the spring semester to assist with researching and writing articles, compiling calendars, proofing pages, updating websites and Facebook pages, and performing other duties related to magazine production.  The internships are unpaid and you must receive college credit. Applicants should be highly motivated with excellent writing skills, knowledge of AP Style, and meticulous attention to detail.  

Persepolis Arts Agency seeks a contributor to its blog “The Artist’s Champion.”

Compensation: $50/month.

The ideal candidate will look at this position as a stepping stone to a larger role in expanding the company’s presence in social media.  The ideal candidate can easily write short pieces on a regular basis to meet deadlines, with inviting style and hearty substance.  We expect this position to be attractive to (1) confident writers who are new to blogging and need an existing platform to showcase their skills; (2) established bloggers who want to take on a small project long-term and expand it in sync with the growth of the company.

Expectations:  Our blog contributor will write in the voice of Persepolis Arts Agency.  One post per week.  The writer will often be given a lead and the crux of the story, and will be expected to flesh out the surrounding details.  For the right candidate, there is also room for guest posts in the writer’s own voice.  The content of the blog will focus on a mixture of

  • arts events around Charlotte
  • major arts events in the South East
  • news of artists and venues around the world
  • artists’ professional development
  • deals offered by vendors on art supplies
  • reviews of exhibits, shows, performances

Terms:  Blog posts will begin first week of February 2011.  We will choose a writer on a paid trial basis for two months.  Pending review, we will ask for a commitment of six months, followed by a review of performance, pay, and responsibilities.  The writer will receive pay at the end of each month. Persepolis will confirm ghostwriter experience.

A Lifestyle magazine focusing on Cabarrus County

CabarrusNow Magazine covers a niche in Cabarrus County not filled by any other publication. Unlike some periodicals that are heavy on ads but light on content, every issue of CabarrusNow Magazine will have regular sections on Technology, Going Green, Provident Living, Service Opportunities, Cabarrus County History and Citizen recognition.  The majority or our writers are citizens of Cabarrus County.

We are looking for an intern who is energetic and willing to help with office work, customer service, as well as research and article writing.

Our office is open from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday.  We are flexible. Whoever joins our team will be able to come in 3-8 hours a day 2-5 days a week.  All I ask is that hours are submitted in advance so we know when the Intern will be working with us.

We are well equipped with desk space for all and computer access for research only.  (No My Space, Face book, You-tube etc.)

We are also close to one of the county libraries and the County's historic Library. Professionalism is of utmost importance.  Please no classroom attire (jeans, t-shirts, mini-skirts, shorts, thongs or flip flops).

SportsOneSource is the sporting goods industry’s leading business-to-business trade news and research service.   We are located in Charlotte, NC, and are seeking talented intern writers to work as part of our editorial team.

Editorial interns will spend their time researching story leads, verifying facts, writing and reviewing editorial submissions and posting news stories for print and web content.  The variety of writing offers the opportunity for students to be involved in multiple projects 
simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Applicants must be at a junior or senior level working toward a bachelor's degree in English, Journalism or applicable major.  The position requires strong communication, writing and editing skills along with meticulous attention to detail for factual accuracy. Two creative writing samples are required for an interview.   Candidates should also possess proficiency in MS Office, Excel and Desktop Publishing.

Charlotte Magazine

Charlotte Magazine is currently looking for motivated, creative, and outgoing editorial interns for the spring and summer semesters. Editorial interns will be part of a team of editors, designers, and an in-house photographer and will help with every aspect of the production of the monthly magazine. Interns will write, edit, and fact-check copy as well as help with styling for photo shoots and attend photo shoots. The internship is unpaid and interns are required to work a minimum of 16 hours per week.

Seeking an intern who would like to garner hands-on experience and street smarts in the field of journalism. I would introduce them to the world of freelance, which will allow them to experience an array of mediums both local and national.

Job Description :

NOTE: I would get an idea of what type of experience and knowledge the intern candidate is seeking to garner most, and I would focus the program around that with the intentions of allowing the candidate to get the most from the experience for which they can apply to their career.

  • Reporting – assist me in covering different stories for my weekly column, cover stories, and other writing projects in construction.
  • Developing pitches/manuscripts for editors – making outlines, writing agent pitches, become active in the process of selling the craft.
  • Transcribing – transcribe interviews and documents to develop into a story
  • Research – help in conducting research for stories
  • Networking – help build contacts and utilize contacts, meet editors, etc. (marketing-oriented approach to journalism).
  • Edit draft stories, contribute creativity – I will help an intern write a story to be pitched to a publication to provide them with a potential clipping for their portfolio
  • Event Planning – coordinating with marketing and promotional staff at both Creative Loafing and ELEVATE Magazine with publication sponsored events.

Charlotte Parent Magazine

Magazine seeks an intern interested in public relations/marketing in the publishing field to work on a visibility and PR campaign. The intern will develop media contacts and news releases on editorial content and work on the magazine's many special events. Strong writing and editing skills, creativity, and enthusiasm required.
