About the ELC
The goals of the English Learning Community include creating an environment that nurtures the community of learners through academic support, social activities and community involvement, and interactions with faculty members and the university community. National research shows that learning community students achieve higher GPAs and are more likely to graduate on time than those students not in a learning community. As UNC Charlotte continues to grow, students enjoy many opportunities that a major university affords: a more diverse student body, a more diverse faculty, and an expanding array of influential speakers and cultural events. However, as the university develops, it is especially important that undergraduate students find a community within the larger university. All studies of success in college point to community-building as the most important factor in determining whether a student will succeed.
