Dear Colleagues,

I hope your semester is going well and that students (and you!) are enjoying classes.  You will find below some recent Kudos and also reminders for October. Please remember to send me news of any recent accomplishments I should share in the next missive.  And if I overlook sending out anyone’s good news, please remind me of that, too.

Today from 4 to 5:15 in the Seminar Room (Fretwell 290B) award-winning essayist Patrice Gopo will read from her new book, Autumn Song: Essays on Absence, followed by a Q+A and conversation

KUDOS

Pilar Blitvich delivered a plenary talk titled “The Pragmatics of Light Groups—Towards a Further Understanding of Intergroup Online Communication” at the 18th International Conference of the China Pragmatics Association. Guangzhou, China. She also participated in a conference workshop titled “Charting Uncharted Territory: Affect and Effect.”

Pilar attended another international conference, the 18th International Pragmatics Conference, Brussels, Belgium, where she participated on the following panels:  

·      Garcés-Conejos Blitvich, P. & Sifianou, M. (2023). Convenors of expert panel: Conflict and language aggression in post-digital societies. (Celebrated JLAC’s 10th anniversary)

·      Garcés-Conejos Blitvich, P. & Fernández Amaya, L. (2023) Morality, civility, and aggression in the attribution and ratification of the Karen social identity. Panel Conflict and language aggression in post-digital societies.  

·      Garcés-Conejos Blitvich, P. & Bou-Franch, P. (2023). Colorism claims/attributions and (non)verifications: Desengañate …NO ERES BLANCO / Face it…YOU’RE NOT WHITE.

Pilar also received funding from Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento 2022, Investigación Orientada Tipo B. Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation for a research project titled: “PATOLOGIZACION DISCURSIVA DIGITAL EN TWITTER, INSTAGRAM Y TIKTOK” (PATDISC). “Discursive pathologizing: Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.”

The audiobook version of Janaka Lewis’s recently published book Light and Legacies has been released.

Kirk Melnikoff’s book chapter “Publishing Virginia (1608–1615): Specialization, Commissioning, Networks” was published in the Oxford Handbook of the History of the Book in Early Modern England (Oxford UP, 2023).

Lara Vetter received favorable reviews of her new H.D. biography in The New York Sun and New Criterion. In his review, Carl Rollyson, also a biographer, writes as much about Lara as a biographer than he does about H.D.  He offers high praise for Lara’s writing, stating “she is as supple as her subject” and “The biographer handles this symbiosis of the writer and her words with exquisite delicacy.” The review from the New York Sun is attached.

October 6 –Department Meeting (reminder: the meeting will start at 12:00 so interested faculty and staff can attend the CHESS town hall meeting from 10:30 to 11:30).

October 7 –Textbook orders for Spring 2024 due to bookstore

October 13 – Mid-Term Unsatisfactory Grades due (even if you have no unsatisfactory grades to report, you should still complete the grade form indicating you have no unsatisfactory grades to report)

October 19 – Last day for students to withdraw from a full-term class, grade subject to withdrawal policy
