M.A. in English: English Education

The goals of the M.A. in English with a concentration in English Education are to create excellent professionals who are knowledgeable, reflective, and effective teachers and who are leaders in their schools and communities. The concentration includes core courses team-taught by faculty in the English Department and the College of Education, which focus on issues in the teaching of English and on research methods and advanced study in English and professional education.

Designed for experienced secondary teachers who hold the NC initial license to teach English/language arts, the Concentration in English Education qualifies graduates for the Master’s/Advanced Competencies “M” license in English Education. Teachers with a Masters degree are eligible for salary increases in the Wake County Public School system (in North Carolina) and in many other states across the country.

The English Education concentration is ideal for students interested in pursuing a PhD in an education-related field. In particular, graduates from the English Education concentration are well-positioned for admission to the PhD in Curriculum and Instruction in the Cato College of Education.
